Two months after playing his last official match on ATP World Tour, Richard Gasquet is back to the courts to play the Millennium Estoril Open 2015 and says he would like to go “one step further” on the portuguese tournament in 2015.
- Ténis Portugal: You’ve been struggling with some back issues this season, how’s the rehab going and how do you feel?
Ténis Portugal: Yes it has been a frustrating start to the year with injuries but I am feeling good now and looking forward to Estoril.
- Ténis Portugal: This year the tournament will be played in a new venue, with a different organization and sponsors. Are you excited to comeback? Afterall, and despite being in a different club, you have good memories from Portugal…
Ténis Portugal: Yes Portugal is a fantastic country and I am really looking forward to coming back. Last time was a good experience although I lost in the final to Juan Martin. Hopefully I can go one step further this year.
- Ténis Portugal: Two finals, runner-up twice. Is this the year to go for the title? You’ve already won one tournament in 2015, is it your biggest priority now [to win another]or are you only focused on a full recover?
Ténis Portugal: Yes for sure I want to win the title. I need matches so I hope to have a good run there. I would like to go as far as possible in all the events and avoid any injuries.
- Ténis Portugal: Former champion of Roland Garros, Sergi Bruguera has been working with you. Can you talk about your relationship with him and how do you guys work on court?
Ténis Portugal: Sergi is a great guy and there is no one better to learn about clay court tennis especially. We have been working very hard together this week in Barcelon and I hope you will see the results of that next week in Estoril.
- Ténis Portugal: You were part of the team that played the Davis Cup final last year — how big would it be for you to win that title in the next few years and how would it make you feel? Would it be the biggest achievement of your career?
Ténis Portugal: The final was very disappointing. Davis Cup is hugely important in France. For both fans and players. We have a great group of players so I hope we can lift the Cup at some point during my career. That would be a highlight.
- Ténis Portugal: Nottingham, in 2005, was your first singles title. You then won three other tournaments before winning on hard courts for the first time, in Mumbai (2007) and since then five of six titles happened on hards. Has this anything to do with the way you worked your game? What can you tell us?
Richard Gasquet: I think my game can adapt well to any surface. I do well on hard, I grew up on clay and I have a Wimbledon semi final. So I would consider myself a multi-surface guy.
